Can I retire at 50? A UK worked example you can change
Updated 19 October 2026. Figures checked against official sources on 19 October 2026.
At 50 a workplace or personal pension can't usually be touched until 57 (from April 2028), and the state pension is at least 17 years away. So retiring at 50 depends on savings you can reach at any age: ISAs and cash.
The calculator is a worked example: someone aged 45 retiring at 50, with £595,000 across a workplace pension, an ISA and cash today. Your money lasts to 95, with £448,633 left.
Worked example
Your money lasts to 95, with £448,633 left.
- Age now
- 45
- Retire at
- 50
- Pots
- £595,000
- Take-home wanted
- £24,000 a year
- Plan until
- 95
Two gaps to cover
- 50 to 57: pensions locked. In this example those 7 years are paid from: Stocks and shares ISA £168,000 (totals in today's money).
- 50 to 67: no state pension. Those 17 years are paid from: Workplace pension £290,851, Stocks and shares ISA £168,000.
ISA withdrawals are tax-free, so the years before 57 cost no income tax in this example. Once the pension opens, the calculator draws it to use your personal allowance and the 20% band.
What the stress tests show
A 25% market fall in the first year means the money still lasts to 95. With growth 2 points lower every year it falls short from 88. In 70 out of 100 market tests it lasts to 95. Lifetime income tax: £97,970.
Things to check
- National Insurance. Stopping work at 50 can leave years missing from your record. You need 35 qualifying years for the full new state pension, and at least 10 for any. Your GOV.UK forecast shows the gaps, and some can be filled with voluntary contributions.
- What you'll spend. You can work out what you'll spend line by line and send the total to the calculator.

Questions people ask
Can I take my pension at 50?
Not usually. The minimum age is 55 until 5 April 2028 and 57 after that, unless your scheme gives you a protected pension age. Taking pension money earlier is normally only possible in serious ill health.
How do people retire at 50 in the UK?
By living on savings they can reach at any age, such as ISAs and cash, until their pensions open at 57 and the state pension at 67. In our example the ISA pays for the first 7 years.
Will retiring at 50 reduce my state pension?
It can, if it leaves you short of 35 qualifying years of National Insurance. Your GOV.UK forecast shows your record.
