Paying family to clean or care: does it cut tax?
Updated 9 October 2026. Figures checked against official sources on 9 October 2026.
Paying a relative to clean, garden or care for you doesn't lower your own income tax. Paying the going rate for real work isn't a gift, so it can leave your estate without the 7-year rule.
In the calculator, pay to family is part of your spending. Worked example: someone aged 72 spending £25,000 a year. Your money lasts to 95, with £48,582 left.

Questions people ask
Can I pay my daughter to clean my house to save tax?
It doesn't lower your income tax: there's no relief for household costs. Pay at the going rate for real work isn't a gift for inheritance tax. It's taxable income for her.
Is money paid to a family carer taxed?
Yes, it's the carer's income. It can also stop their Carer's Allowance if they earn over £204 a week after tax and expenses.
Do I need to pay family the minimum wage?
Usually, if you employ them. The exception is family who live in your home and share in the housework and family life.
